Rejuvination of Cricket In Nagaland

My grandfather had once told me that Nagaland was a serious cricket playing state where club cricket was a huge craze & cricketers from Assam would be brought in to make the leagues competitive . Years later , the enthuasism for cricket remains the same as far as Nagaland especially Dimapur is concerned . We still have young people playing club cricket every Saturday , Sunday as a hobby more than it being a serious profession .In the wilderness of all these Sundays matches , A ray of amazing cricketing talent would be visible that would make us go –wow what a player . But the talent would very soon get diminished with age as playing cricket in Nagaland did not pay much . It was sad to see superb talents go waste in trying to go for 9.00 to 5.00 jobs in shops or offices killing their cricketing dreams to run a family . All these because there was no way forward as far as talent in cricket is concerned .With no Ranji representation of Nagaland & no proper coaching in this part of the world many young cricketers have no choice but to keep cricket as a Sunday hobby .
But all this has changed with the Nagaland Cricket Association taking the right steps by getting an affiliation from the Big Brother Board Of Control Of Cricket in India . So finally the dream of having to see a Nagaland Ranji Team might just come true if the steps do not halt & waver to another direction . The 1st steps have been taken as a BCCI representative coach Mr Nihal Ahmed has been sent to Dimapur to give important coaching tips to young cricketers . The Nagaland Cricket Association has also started to encourage the next generation by starting an under-16 interschool Tournament from which a Dimapur under-16 team will be picked & finally a Nagaland state under-16 team will be established to play other states .
I m proud that my school is taking part in this encouragement of budding cricketers by sending a St.Mary’s School Team for this tournament . The tournament has kicked off with a big opening ceremony where all teams have assembled to take a pledge to play the tournament with the right spirit . 10 participating teams have been distributed in 2 groups 5 each , with 2 from each group to go for a semifinal & finally the big Final .
So while I m definitely proud of my school for taking keen interest in setting up a team & finally sending it for matches ( a part of it , I will like to take credit as I am one of the teachers in charge ) , What saddens me is the fact that there are still some schools who don’t take sports that too seriously as it should be . One of the school taking part do not have the encouragement of the school as all the participation stuff right from filling up the form to everything has been done by the excited students with the teachers or higher authorities not taking any part in it . Another school has decided not to take part as their board results have been bad this year . I completely understand of academic results being the utmost important criteria as far as schools are concerned , but the lethargic attitude of schools towards sports even in this generation when Cricketers are getting extra opportunities , fame & name is really appalling .
I hope it changes & we can have a society where sports & crickets are both given equal importance . Lets also hope that the steps of the Nagaland Cricket Association become a roaring success & talent in Nagaland get the world platform to showcase what they are really capable of
.
